TFOT (Tear Film Oriented Therapy)

TFOT is the acronym for Tear Film Oriented Therapy.
In Japan, decreased tear film stability is regarded as the core mechanism of dry eye.
Thus, dry eye is treated from the aspect of improving the tear film stability.

This therapeutic approach has been increasing in importance due to the introduction of ophthalmic solutions that stimulate the secretion of mucin and water.

By selecting topical therapy, each layer of the ocular surface can be targeted for therapy, thus further stabilizing the tear film. In Japan, this approach has ushered in a new era of increasingly effective dry eye treatments.

The figure below illustrates the current topical dry eye therapy options that contribute to the treatment of each layer of the ocular surface.
